Abstract
This paper aims to examine how the pathway of the effect of spousal bereavement on depression in older adults differs between men and women by using various factors that are known to affect depression in old age. The data used here, on men and women 65 and older, are from the fifth Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA). First analysis to verify the factors of depression in the elderly shows that the more help is needed for household chores, the worse the health and economic conditions, in case of no participation in social activities and in the absence of a spouse, the degree of depression is worsen. However, gender-based analysis shows that the degree to which men and women are affected by each factor is different, indicating that there are differences in the major depressive factors between men and women. The main analysis to find out the effect of the spousal bereavement on the depression shows that the factors which have meaningful differences between sexes are ¡°the help for household chores¡± and ¡°social activity¡±. For women, the more help is needed for household chores, the more depressed they are in the spouse group. For men, social activities are more helping to reduce the depression in the nonspouse group. From this, it is found that the spouse loss affects the mental health of men and women in different way, and the traditional gender norms seem to influence the result.
